Victoria Reads "Tris's Book"

11/21/17 - Chapters 1-2

Today I started trying to do what I've seen Mark Oshiro do with Sandry's Book--record himself reading the book aloud for the first time. I decided to try this because as I said in my review of Sandry's Book, I'm afraid the audiobook is responsible for my more-negative opinion of that book. I wish it weren't the case, because I think it's a perfectly decent audiobook, but it really makes the book feel too juvenile to me. I found that reading the chapters aloud today helped me enjoy the book a lot more somehow. I also just really like reading aloud...

I'd love to be an audiobook narrator but I'm not very good at doing different voices, and I think I might do vocal fry. I didn't even realize I do it until I was listening to my recordings and noticed that my voice sounded very raspy/gravelly... idk why... It sounded like I was sick or had just woken up, but I hadn't. And on later recordings I had a very difficult time trying to make my voice sound "normal." Maybe that's just the way I talk now? Anyway, it wasn't terribly pleasant to listen to.

But it brought back memories of when I shared a room with my sister Aleks and I used to read books aloud to her. That was a lot of fun. A few of those books she'd read before but I was experiencing for the first time (like a Death Note book, and The Hunger Games Trilogy), and a few I'd read before but she hadn't (like The Outsiders and Hatchet), and then there were a couple that were new to both of us (Of Mice and Men, and The Giver). It was a lot of fun experiencing the books with her in real time, and I'm grateful that she let me read to her and even enjoyed it as well. I can't believe we got through so many books together!

So I'd really like to read aloud to people again, but idk how I can do that. It's fun to practice again though and record myself. Maybe it's something I could do for youtube someday? Maybe for people who don't have access to audiobooks? It would be a way they could still hear a story for free? idk. There's probably no audience for it, lol. And why me? Who would listen to me? I don't think I'm bad, but I definitely don't think I'm particularly good either. But still, it would be fun to do... :)

ANYWAY, about the book. As I said, I'm liking the experience of reading it much better than Sandry's book so far, which is funny, because I like Sandry a lot better than Tris. I mean Sandry is a little bit of a goody-two-shoes Mary-Sue (her only fault so far is that she's afraid of the dark?). Tris already seems to be getting more likeable (and can I really blame her for how annoying she was in Sandry's book when she'd been treated badly by so many people? ... Yes, yes I can), but I don't know. I don't really like any of the characters yet. But I probably like Sandry best because she's friendly and confident and has a good attitude.

I thought it was pretty weird that the other kids could hear the voices Tris heard on the wind, and that it had something to do with Sandry binding their powers together. I also think that's a little bit of a weak explanation/plot device. By that I just mean it's pretty unbelievable. Sandry is a child and barely trained in her magic, and yet she did something as complicated as binding their magics together in that earthquake situation? I'd believe that she managed to temporarily link their magic, but for it to have any permanent or lasting effects for the group just seems a little far-fetched to me. I would think it would take a lot more power or skill to manage to do something like that. So clearly it's just a way for the others to be clued into the plot too, and not just Tris.

Speaking of the plot, some watchtowers got blown up? And who were those people they heard talking? Were they the ones who died in the explosion, or was it others, like the guards?

Also, that's weird that Niklaren would bring Tris along to do that looking-into-the-past spell. Why her? Wasn't there anyone else more suitable to draw the magic from?

And the bird hatchling that Tris rescues in the tower... what's the meaning of that? Are they all going to end up with pets they've rescued? Sandry's got the dog, Little Bear (I mean, it seems to belong to all four of them, but I think the book suggested that it was sleeping in Sandry's room... and she WAS the one to initially go to its rescue). Briar has his Bonsai tree... but will that really be his "pet" if they DO all end up with pets? Or will he get something else in his own book? What kind of pet would Daja have? It would be cool if one of them got a cat, but I don't know that that would really be fitting for any of them. A bird seems pretty fitting for Tris though, with her being kind of associated with the wind/air element. Briar is earth and Daja is fire, and Sandry is.... light? Doesn't really seem to be water anyway.

Anyway, so far it is interesting and I look forward to reading more.
